DIAGNOSED COMBINED ADHD

LOCATION ~ OX18

Emma-Marie is a fully qualified and accredited counsellor. She was diagnosed in 2021 with combined ADHD, after a lifetime of feeling different, not fitting in and being treated for anxiety and depression.

Emma-Marie found school boring, particularly subjects that didn’t interest her, like maths and PE!  She found herself truanting a lot and smoking and drinking alcohol in an attempt to fit in and to feel like she belonged somewhere.

Emma-Marie’s journey to her ADHD diagnosis aged 31, came about when looking at ways to support her son.  When researching what her son was struggling with, she recognised a lot of issues that clicked with her own past and led to her seeking her own assessment. It also made sense as to why none of the anti-depressant medications had ever made much difference to how she was feeling.

Emma-Marie has supported many clients diagnosed with ADHD.  She has also worked with many wondering if they have the condition and those going through the assessment and diagnostic process.

One of Emma Marie’s biggest struggles throughout life has been with her poor short term memory and organisational skills.  She’s had to work incredibly hard to get structures into place to help with this.  She very much enjoys sharing the ideas and coping mechanisms she has in place that have been helpful to see if they too could work with her clients.  And collaboratively exploring new ones that will work for them specifically

Emma-Marie feels that one of the best things a counsellor can offer is a space to be truly heard and validated.  After a lifetime of not being heard or validated, this is something she is keen to give back to clients.

Emma-Marie is passionate about clients learning to be compassionate to themselves. Many, like her, have often grown up with a very negative inner voice. Often this can be from school where ADHD children are too often told “you’ll never amount to anything” and “if only you just made an effort you’d achieve so much more”.

Emma-Marie loves to help people replace those negative and critical voices with more compassionate ones.

Miscarriage, baby loss and infertility is a topic very close to Emma-Marie’s heart as she’s seen and experienced first hand the devastation and heartbreak it brings with it, the longing for answers, the aching to hold a baby in your arms, the feeling that the pain will never end, that no one can understand, that it will never get better.

After each of her own losses Emma-Marie experienced the waves of grief which combined with navigating life with ADHD, at points made life almost impossible. Emma had experienced three late miscarriages between the stages of 14 and 16 weeks, and this led to multiple medical procedures to try and stop further losses so she has a very good understanding and empathy of the medical trauma that can go alongside this type of loss.

Emma-Marie has also had to come to terms with the fact that she may never be able to have another baby so this also something she is able to support clients going through this with.

Emma-Marie  is passionate about supporting all clients whether they are just thinking about the possibility of having ADHD, going through the assessment and diagnosis process or coming to terms with having the condition following a diagnosis.
