PROFILE
Amanda realised she was neurodiverse following many years of advocating for her children, but like many parents working to support their families her needs were left at the bottom of her to do list. After fighting for assessment and EHCP’s for both of her children who were diagnosed ADHD, ASD, SPD and Dyslexic she quickly understood that parents were expected to become experts in order to navigate SEND within the education system to fully support and advocate for her family.
Amanda had to reduce her hours and eventually leave her management role in London to be available to assure all EHCP provisions were adhered to for her children throughout mainstream education, alternative provisions and EOTAS packages. This made her very aware of the toll of families navigating education and EHCP systems, so she began to advise other parents on social media support pages. This led to a four-year journey of qualifying as a counsellor.
Amanda has found that there are many gaps in provision and support for neurodiverse people and their families, particularly during very long waiting times for assessment, diagnosis and support. She has found that in this time families are under extreme pressure left with little hope or help in understanding their children or themselves; very often blamed by society & professionals. Children are often left feeling rejected and different with low self-worth struggling to accept themselves or know their place. She has seen during her work with counselling charities with adults and young people that this can lead to making unhealthy decisions, self-harming, self-medicating or getting into crime as well as repeated patterns of unhealthy relationships.
Amanda believes that support early on can make a difference and can be as simple as understanding triggers, how our bodies react when dysregulated and what we need to regulate. This leads to confidence in self-regulation, self-advocacy and trust in neurodiverse people of all ages. She is also keen to provide parent support in a way that is not delivered as a parenting skills course, but reaches to parents as individuals who require a safe, accepting and non-judgemental space to explore their own experiences and feelings.
Amanda works mainly with client led modes which allows for integrative methods, such as creative work, sand play & sensory regulation. She provides a sensory safe environment for all clients based on their unique needs in her purpose-built studio.
Amanda turned to Headstuff for a pre assessment in which she was not surprised by her high scores in ADHD, ASD & SPD assessment tools. She is now on the right to choose pathway following some procrastination.
